History of the smoker

Overall, I was introduced to cigarettes around 7th grade - my brother and I climbed construction sites and learned to smoke "on the fly". Of course, our parents stopped us from smoking, so we had to constantly find ways to hide cigarettes and get rid of the constant smell of smoke.

Then came the companies in which everyone also smoked. There was a kind of fashion, they say, if you do not smoke, then do not get cold. Now everything is different, but before the times were different. So, surrounded by smokers, the habit took root in me more and more. I smoked as often as possible, and the likelihood of being burned by adults only gave the process more momentum.

But at the age of 16, I had a click on my head and decided to quit smoking. Like, suddenly, by will. To be honest, there was a positive moment from this, though not for long. After two weeks, I changed my mind, I said I can smoke when I smoke. That is, when I am sober, I do not smoke, but at parties I can smoke. And as you already guessed, I did not stop here. Although it has a positive effect - for 4 years I drank enough tobacco.

But there is also a big disadvantage to this method. Since there was a strong association of smoking with alcohol in my brain, I was drawn to drinking whenever I just wanted to smoke.

But I did not stop here either. In my third year of university, I got a job in a taxi and lit a cigarette. I smoke almost a pack a day, and when I drank more. And that went on until the fall of 2017. That means, roughly, my experience as a smoker was about 10 years.

Friends, in this chapter I will show you how I went through the process of quitting smoking, and then how to do it. Therefore, if you are too lazy to read, you can move on to reading the next chapter. Many people just ask me how I got it, but it is inappropriate to be smart because the method is quite simple.

So, in October 2017, I woke up in the morning after a hectic party and felt bad. I did not get enough sleep, I had a severe headache from the alcohol I had drunk the day before, the vestibular apparatus did not function properly. I smoked a cigarette and got in the car. The car was stuffy and carried an unpleasant odor of cord odor. Moreover, I started to feel sick. In general, a full range of negative feelings.

At that moment I started to feel nauseous and the taste of a smoked cigarette was recently in my mouth. I looked out the window: it was wonderful autumn weather outside, the sun was shining brightly and the leaves were falling from the trees. And then I was flooded with very pleasant childhood memories associated with this particular weather and a similar landscape. To me it was a pleasant association of the situation outside the window with that from childhood when I felt good, and not like now in the car. What did I do next?

My 3 Immediate Steps

  1. I just associated strong suffering and negativity at this point in time with a smoked cigarette. And I felt with my whole body that it was from what I felt so bad now. This was not hard to do because there was an unpleasant taste of tobacco in my mouth. Plus added constant shortness of breath and money costs.
  2. Next, I looked out the window again and completely connected the pleasant feeling with quitting smoking. Again, it was not difficult to do this because in that situation since my childhood I did not smoke and felt good. Plus, I added the pleasant feeling that without cigarettes you can safely climb the stairs and not choke. I also added monetary advantages: if you do not buy cigarettes, then you can buy yourself something useful.
  3. At the height of my emotional state, I made a clear, conscious decision to quit smoking for good.

All this took me about 10 seconds. The emotional tremor was so strong that I immediately threw the package in the trash.

But these steps will not be enough in the long run, so then I had to implement some steps, which also worked successfully. You will read about them a little below.

Now for the entertainment part. I managed to quit smoking quite by accident. I did not prepare for this decision, I did not go to the doctors, I did not buy gum from smoking, plaster, spraying and other nonsense. A few months later, I started reading Tony Robbins's book on self-improvement and found exactly these methods that I unknowingly applied!

6 steps to get rid of addiction

These principles are built on neuro-associative conditioning. Here are:

  1. Make a clear and informed decision about why you want to quit smoking. You are the ones who want this, not your loved ones.
  2. Use leverage: Associate great emotional satisfaction with quitting smoking now and strong anxiety if you do not quit now. Do something like what I did, or think of another way to do it. Most importantly, you need to feel strong emotions and associate them with smoking.
  3. We need to break the old behavior. For example, I would go to the smoking room at work and discuss the business with my colleagues, smoking. After I quit smoking, I started communicating with them in "non-smoking" places.
  4. Create a new alternative. But this step, friends, is most important if you are focused on the long-term plan. The fact is that quitting smoking alone is not enough. You need to replace the pleasure that cigarettes brought you with something else. Something that will not give you side effects. For example, instead of smoking with friends, I watched an interesting TV series or drank tea. You need to find a stimulant alternative to smoking for yourself by looking at the reasons why you smoked. Let’s say you got a cigarette when you started to worry. Exercising or achieving a short-term goal helps a lot from this feeling.
  5. You should do the installation "permanently" instead of "at least a week". And repeat the above steps until it becomes a habit. It took me about 3 weeks to do this.
  6. Come up with a reward system. This is a very important step. You should know that if you do not smoke today, you have the opportunity to buy yourself something nice little; if a week, then the thing is bigger; if a month, then a vacation abroad. I just did it - I constantly encouraged myself until the habit completely disappeared.

Name me at least one person who put plaster and got rid of addiction. For example, I do not know such people. The fact is that all of these drugs only partially relieve physical dependence. And she, believe me, is not that strong already. But this is a profitable business because people buy. They buy and hope for a miracle method that will work in their case. This will not happen.
